Yes, you need a new mattress in your RV! I have yet to hear of a comfortable mattress that comes in an RV. The one question that often arises when mattress shopping is whether RV mattress sizes differ from standard mattresses. Let’s explore the world of RV mattresses, their sizes and how to choose one that will work for your RV!
Understanding RV Mattress Sizes:
RV mattresses come in a variety of sizes, and while some may align with standard mattress dimensions, others are specifically designed to fit the spatial constraints of recreational vehicles. Here’s a breakdown of common RV mattress sizes:
1. RV Short Queen: The RV Short Queen is a popular option in RVs. It typically measures 60 x 75 inches, which is shorter than a standard queen mattress.
2. RV Queen: Similar to the RV Short Queen, the RV Queen provides a bit more length, measuring around 60 x 80 inches. It’s an excellent option for those who desire a more spacious sleeping area.
3. RV King: The RV King is designed to fit larger RVs, offering a generous sleeping space comparable to a standard king-size mattress. It usually measures 72 x 80 inches.
4. RV Bunk Mattresses: Bunk beds are a common feature in RVs, and consequently, RV bunk mattresses are tailored to fit these compact sleeping quarters. Dimensions can vary, but common sizes include 28 x 75 inches or 30 x 75 inches.
Considerations When Choosing an RV Mattress:
1. Space Constraints: Measure your RV bedroom space carefully to ensure the chosen mattress fits, including the height! At 5’0 I had to use a stool to get in bed after our new mattress and topper in our old bunkhouse. Consider factors such as slide-outs and under the bed storage. A thicker mattress will make it harder to get into that area. Also if your mattress is too wide it’s hard to put sheets on and moisture can get trapped between the wall and the mattress.
2. Customization Options: Some RV manufacturers offer customization options for mattresses, allowing owners to tailor the size and type to their preferences. They can make a hinged mattress for the new RV beds that raise during the day. We got a regular mattress at the advice of people in an online group and our bed no longer raises up. (However the bed is really comfortable so we’ll keep it. We got a Aurora Luxe from Brooklyn Bedding)
3. Mattress Types: Just like standard mattresses, RV mattresses come in various types, including memory foam, innerspring, and latex. Choose a mattress that suits your comfort preferences and provides a good night’s sleep on the road. We are side sleepers and prefer a soft mattress.
